The Christmas Conundrum – Clean the Oven Before or After

Decision Time
Well folks, it’s that time of year again. You know, decision day. Do I clean my oven before I cook the Christmas lunch for all those lovely in-laws or do I leave it until after the goose has been well and truly cooked? You decide to do the right thing and go for it now so, after drawing lots to identify the unlucky volunteer, the remainder of the family can sit back, watch and smile.
Having lost the toss and been put into bat on a tricky wicket you stealthily enter the kitchen and prepare to do battle. You open the oven door only to be confronted almost immediately by several hundred rather angry bats exiting at pace, irate at being woken up from their year long slumber, a veritable host of large toothed four legged furry animals related to a species unbeknown even to David Attenborough and last but not least what could only be described as a small, but fairly vocal, tribe of extras from the 1966 British film classic 1 Million Years B.C. each armed with the required spiky club and resplendent in their pterodactyl skinned loincloths. Incidentally the strange animal paintings and markings on the inside of the oven can easily be removed after reading our previous Blog posting related to the removal of unwanted graffiti.
The self appointed leader of the cavemen steps forward and grunts in broken English “We have seen how you can cook food without fire so we believe that you have now landed a man on the moon. We saw how communications no longer required fire and smoke so we believe that you now can send mail electronically between continents.
But hang on a minute, Man City top of the league at Christmas? You’re having a laugh mate.” He shouts across to his bearded and bedraggled comrades who now share his look of absolute incredulity “Hey guys wait ’til you hear this one. Man City are top of the league. Aye, right.”

How To Remove Chewing Gum From Carpets & Floors

What Has Finland Ever Done For Us?
Well, apart from the ubiquitous Nokia ‘phones pinned to the ears of rude people on planes, trains and automobiles they may well have brought us chewing gum. A blob of some 5,000 year old gum, resplendent with tooth marks, was discovered in Finland, probably on a pavement or under a seat. It used to be made from completely natural elements – spruce, paraffin wax and chicle (hence the brand name of Chiclets) although it was a certain William Semple who applied for a patent for chewing gum as early as December 28th 1869. Most gums are now made out of synthetic rubber for cost and availability reasons.
A Modern Day Scourge
We have all stood or sat on a piece of discarded gum and given that huge sigh of frustration as the gooey mess stretches out from your shoe or the seat of your pants or dress. Indeed, chewing gum has been banned from such places as Disney worldwide, Universal Studios, Seaworld, Busch Gardens, Schiphol Airport and probably most famously of all the island of Singapore since 1992.

D-Bond is a quick, effective, woolsafe application for removing chewing gum from all types of carpet. Performance is best on dried gum however if the gum is still relatively fresh and soft you may obtain quicker results using SELFREEZ (See below). D-Bond is ideal for pubs, clubs and all carpeted public areas and comes as a 340ml trigger spray.
We strongly recommend that you test a small inconspicuous area of the carpet for colour fastness before commencing cleaning. Spray liberally over the chewing gum and immediate surrounding area. Wait for a few minutes for the chemical action to take place. Using a blunt edged scraper and / or cloth – gently peel the gum from the carpet, taking care not to damage delicate fabrics. After use rinse out with water or a suitable extraction shampoo using an extraction machine.
SELFREEZ is a chewing gum and sticky substance remover for easy removal from carpets and floors. SELFREEZ is also suitable for the removal of sticky deposits. It rapidly freezes chewing gum and sticky deposits so that they may be quickly and easily scraped from carpets and furnishings. Freezes down to a temperature of -80°C but it will not attack fabrics or plastics. Simply spray SELFREEZ onto the offending sticky substance and then scrape off with a knife when white frost hardens it. If the substance softens before removed completely, repeat the above directions. SELFREEZ comes as a 340ml aerosol spray.
Prochem Chewing Gum Remover is a freezer spray for the removal of chewing gum and sticky sweets from any surface. It is supplied with a discharge nozzle to apply freezer action direct to gum which can then be broken away from fibres with a blunt knife. It comes as a 150ml aerosol spray.

How To Remove Graffiti From Brickwork

Graffiti – modern day urban art to be appreciated or wanton unsightly vandalism with the perpetrators needing to be strung up? Depends I guess on whether the bored, teenaged wannabee Banksy has just spray painted your garden wall or someone else’s in your particular neighbourhood.
Funny or Upsetting
There is no doubt that graffiti can be regarded as artistic, even humorous in certain circumstances. I personally remember back in 1968 just after the Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia to quell the Prague Spring some local anti-Communist painted ‘Free Dubĉek’ in support of the oppressed Czech leader on a red brick wall only for a comedian to add the immortal words ‘(with every four gallons)’ immediately below the initial statement. In Scotland, innumerable ‘Jesus Saves’ proclamations were subsequently clarified with the following addition ‘but Big Joe Jordan scores the rebound.’ Amusing yes, but only whilst both Dubĉek and Jordan remained topical.

How to Keep a Cleaner Kitchen

“A place for everything and everything in its place” is a great rule to remember. Kitchen utensils and appliances should have their own dedicated space in the kitchen. They’re quicker and easier to find and after use should be put away immediately.
Clean a Little Every Day
Areas that are used often should be cleaned regularly. These are usually the three points of your “work triangle” which are typically the cooking area, washing area and food/utensil storage area. Try to spend some time daily to give these areas a quick clean and ensure everything is in its right place.
Don’t Spread Germs
